Elenia’s new electricity network investments will create extensive work

We have signed new framework contracts for the construction of weatherproof electricity networks in Kanta-Häme, Päijät-Häme, Pirkanmaa, Central Finland, South Ostrobothnia and North Ostrobothnia. The contracts cover the years 2026–2027 and also include two option years. The total value of the contracts over the four-year period will exceed EUR 65 million. Our network investments will improve the reliability and security of electricity distribution and have an employment effect of 140–150 annual work units per year in the regional contracting companies.

“Our investments will significantly improve the reliability of electricity distribution and the security of supply, enable the connection of growing electricity consumption to the grid and strengthen critical infrastructure for the needs of society,” says Jukka Laakso, Unit Manager, Project and Construction Management.

Our electricity network area in Kanta-Häme, Päijät-Häme, Pirkanmaa, Central Finland, South Ostrobothnia and North Ostrobothnia is divided into contracting areas. We are planning approximately 70 construction projects for the first two years covered by the contracts. Over 1,600 kilometres of underground cable networks and more than 700 kiosk-style secondary substations will be built during 2026 and 2027. At the same time, approximately 20,000 old electricity poles will be removed from the landscape and recycled in various ways.

Work for an extensive network of contractors

We have selected seven contractors as construction partners: Enerke Oy, KNK Networks, Eltel Networks Oy, Omexom, Veljekset Hemming Oy, Pirkanmaan Verkostopalvelu Oy and Telog Oy. The procurement was carried out as a public procurement in compliance with the Act on Public Contracts and Concessions of Entities Operating in the Water, Energy, Transport and Postal Services Sectors.

"Long-term contracts enable us to develop our operations together with our partners. I am very pleased that we are able to invest so significantly in the renewal of electricity distribution and the development of our network," Laakso says.

"The investments will have a considerable employment effect in the regions concerned, which will strengthen their local vitality. Taking into account the employment effect of the contracting partners and their subcontracting activities, the employment effect will be approximately 140–150 annual work units per year," Laakso notes.

Over the past decade, we have renewed the ageing electricity network and increased the share of weatherproof network to over 65 per cent of its 77,000-kilometre electricity network.
