Fault in the neutral conductor

How to recognise a fault in the neutral conductor

Fault in neutral conductor is a rare, but possible, disruption to the damaged power grid. Fault in neutral conductor occurs when the neutral conductor of the power lines breaks. This can cause the voltage on the wire to rise, leading to damage to electrical equipment and a risk of electric shock. These faults occur especially in low-voltage networks when a tree falls on a wire.

It might be a fault in neutral conductor if the property's electricity network behaves strangely after a power cut, for example:

  • Some lights are brighter or dimmer than normal, especially when other electrical appliances are switched on or off.
  • Electrical appliances operate erratically or lamps break.
  • You get an electric shock from a metallic device. In this situation, you should also seek medical attention if necessary.
  • You hear "crackling" and banging sound from the electrical panel and you may smell a burnt burn.

If you suspect a fault in neutral conductor, do this

  • Disconnect the main switch with one hand, keeping the other hand in your pocket or otherwise on your body.
  • Avoid touching metal parts of the centre, which may be live.
  • Immediately call the Elenia fault service on 0800 100 100 and follow the instructions you receive.

Compensations

As a result of a fault in neutral conductor, electrical equipment may be damaged due to a substantial reduction in the quality of the electricity. For such a fault, you may be entitled for a compensation. Elenia will assess all compensation situations on a case-by-case basis. You can contact us about compensation by emailing vahingonkorvaukset@elenia.fi. Please include a photo of the broken appliance and the year of purchase.
